What is Half Moon Pose?

Half Moon Pose, known as Ardha Chandrasana in Sanskrit, is a standing pose that combines balance, strength, and openness. The Sanskrit name is derived from two words: ‘Ardha’ which means ‘half’ and ‘Chandra’ which means ‘moon’, together symbolizing the balance and serenity of the moon.

Why is Half Moon Pose Important?

  2. Strengthens the body: This pose engages your core, leg, ankle, and buttock muscles, promoting overall strength.

How to Practice Half Moon Pose:

  1. Begin in Triangle Pose (Trikonasana) with the right foot forward.
  2. Bend your right knee and step the left foot in a few inches, reaching the right hand a foot or so forward onto a yoga block or the floor.
  3. Firmly rooting down into the right foot and hand, float the left leg up until it’s parallel to the floor.
  4. Keep the left hip stacked on top of the right and reach the left arm towards the sky. Gaze can be down, forward, or up towards the left hand.
  5. Maintain the pose for 5 to 10 breaths, then slowly release and repeat on the other side.
