Standing Splits: Balance and Flexibility

At One Big Heart Yoga Studio, we strive to empower your journey toward enhanced mental and physical well-being through the transformative power of yoga. This blog post will delve into the Standing Splits Pose, a challenging balance and flexibility posture. We’ll discuss what the pose is, its significance, and how to correctly perform it.

What is Standing Splits Pose?

Standing Splits, or Urdhva Prasarita Eka Padasana, is a one-legged balance pose that promotes flexibility in the hamstrings and hips. In this pose, one leg is grounded while the other is lifted and extended upwards, reaching for the sky.

Why is Standing Splits Pose important?

  1. Builds strength: This pose strengthens the legs and core, helping to improve overall physical strength and stability.
  2. Enhances balance: Standing Splits challenges your balance and coordination, fostering a greater sense of body awareness and proprioception.
  3. Increases flexibility: The pose gives the hamstrings and hip flexors of the lifted leg a deep stretch, promoting flexibility and mobility.
  4. Calms the mind: Like other inversions, Standing Splits encourages fresh blood flow to the brain, which can have a calming effect on the mind.
  5. Develops focus and concentration: Balancing poses like Standing Splits demand focus and concentration, enhancing these important mental skills.

How to practice Standing Splits Pose:

  1. Begin in a Forward Fold (Uttanasana) at the top of your mat.
  2. Plant your hands on the mat, and step one foot back about the length of a leg’s distance.
  3. Shift your weight onto the front foot and begin to lift the back leg towards the ceiling.
  4. Keep your hips squared towards the mat. It’s more important to keep the hips level than to lift the leg high.
  5. Breathe deeply and try to draw your forehead closer to your standing leg. Keep your gaze towards the back foot.
  6. Hold the pose for 5-10 breaths or as long as you feel comfortable.
  7. To exit the pose, slowly lower the lifted leg and step both feet together at the top of the mat. Repeat on the other side.
