What is Warrior I Pose?
Warrior I Pose, or Virabhadrasana I, is a strong standing posture that engages the entire body and challenges your balance and focus. In this pose, you’ll stand with one foot forward and the other foot positioned back, bending the front knee and extending your arms overhead. Warrior I Pose is accessible to practitioners of all levels and serves as a foundation for many yoga sequences.
Why is Warrior I Pose important?

How to practice Warrior I Pose:
- Begin standing at the top of your mat in Mountain Pose (Tadasana).
- Step your left foot back about 3-4 feet, placing it at a 45-degree angle with the heel grounded.
- Bend your right knee, ensuring it is directly above your ankle and not extending past your toes.
- Square your hips and shoulders toward the front of your mat, engaging your core.
- Extend your arms overhead, palms facing each other or touching. Relax your shoulders away from your ears.
- Gaze forward or slightly up, maintaining a steady breath and focus.
- Hold the pose for 5-10 breaths or as long as you feel comfortable.
- To exit the pose, straighten your front leg and lower your arms as you exhale. Step your back foot forward to return to Mountain Pose, and then repeat on the other side.
